The Imperial Traditions
Our work draws from China’s four UNESCO-recognised imperial brocade traditions — the gold-threaded Cloud Brocade of Nanjing, the richly coloured Shu Brocade of Chengdu, the geometric Song Brocade of Suzhou, and the bold folk patterns of Guangxi’s Zhuang Brocade. Each carries its own dynasty, its own weaving language, its own world.
The art of weaving — five-step process
From silk to object — the process
Sourcing — raw materials only
Every piece begins with Grade 6A mulberry silk, grown in China's traditional sericulture regions of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. For Yunjin cloud brocade pieces, we also source 24-karat gold and silver thread from the same suppliers who have served Nanjing's imperial workshops for generations. No synthetic substitutes. No blended fibres.
Pattern design — tradition, interpreted
Traditional brocade patterns are studied against archival documentation and interpreted for contemporary contexts. Our design team works alongside cultural heritage scholars to ensure historical accuracy, then collaborates directly with master weavers to adapt patterns to modern proportions — a scarf, a bag, a table runner — without losing the original compositional logic.
Weaving — entirely by hand
Each piece is woven by hand on traditional looms that have not materially changed in centuries. A single metre of Yunjin cloud brocade can take a master weaver an entire working day to produce. Shu brocade requires the simultaneous management of up to 100 warp threads per centimetre. There are no shortcuts. There is no machine equivalent. This is not a limitation — it is the point.
Presentation — the final object
Loongweave pieces are wrapped in conservation-grade acid-free tissue, housed in lacquered boxes made from sustainably sourced Chinese elm, and accompanied by a handwritten certificate of origin identifying the weaver, the workshop, and the tradition. The packaging is designed to be kept — it is part of the object.
Quality review — 22-point inspection
Every finished piece is examined against a 22-point quality standard developed with our master weavers. Thread density, colour consistency, pattern alignment, selvedge finish — each element is inspected by hand before a piece is approved. Pieces that do not meet the standard are returned to the workshop, not discounted and sold.
The master — artisan profiles
Zhang jiayi began his apprenticeship at age fourteen with his grandfather. He is one of fewer than thirty people in the world capable of producing the full-float gold-thread weaving for which Yunjin is famed. His work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Palace Museum in Beijing.
